I’m going to pretend the Canucks game tonight did not happen so I can focus on happy things. Like random throwbacks to childhood when you least expect them.
I was wandering downtown amongst the Olympics shenanigans when the Underground theme from Super Mario Brothers 2 grabbed my ear. I didn’t really get into video games past the 32-bit generation, and Super Mario 2 was always one of my favorites, and I love the music. It feels old-timey. Older-timey than the 20 years ago when the game was current.
I was so impressed by how complete the rendition was – I’m pretty sure they went through the entire game! That takes love. Or dedication, at least. It takes something that not everybody has. I hardly ever give anything to anybody, but I chucked a few bucks their way.
It’s been a few days since the fire went out, and I still feel like the city is still recovering. I don’t really know. I’ve been between work and home and barely anywhere else since the hockey game. The Paralympic Torch Relay has begun and many attractions will remain open or will reopen for the Paralympics. With the reduced lineups, I might go somewhere other than the crowded streets of downtown. I hope the lineups aren’t too reduced though; I hope we show the visitors for the Paralympics as much of a good time as we did for the Olympics.
It’s silly, but it thrills me to see my city on TV constantly. It’s nothing new; at any given moment, there are at least 45 kajillion TV shows or movies filming in Vancouver, and if you’re from here, you’re either employed in the film industry or know people who are.
But that’s different. As a filming location, Vancouver is usually dressed up to look like some other location, like outer space, or the town Superman’s from, or even the Bronx (beware of rumbles). Right now, every majestic skyline and sparkling aerial view is clearly and accurately labelled with both location and year. Vancouver 2010! That’s right! That’s exactly where and when I am! →
After today’s hockey victory, not to mention all the medals, Scott and I made a quick trip downtown to collect a few high-fives. We were in and out in less than an hour, and got everything out of it that we needed: we sang O Canada with strangers, high-fived strangers, shouted “WOOOOOOOO!!!!!” with strangers, and glanced sympathetically at a Russia fan. →
I’ve spent the past week or so surrounded by cowbells.
More cowbells than usual.
Next time I go downtown to dig the Olympic crowds, I think I’ll bring my tambourine. I miss playing with my tambourines, which is kind of stupid, because they’re just chilling out in the spare room, waiting for me to feel like some noisemaking.
This song makes me want to go check out my spare room.
